Seven Things to Know Before You Marry

Core Values – Do they match?
  • Honesty – kindness – thoughtfulness – work ethic.

  • Do they demonstrate behaviors that align with the Ten Commandments? No one is perfect but we do need to strive to keep those Commandments.

Financial
  • Saver or Spender – If you are both savers, you will experience less financial stress.

  • You will both want to save to meet your financial goals.

  • Spenders – will usually have a high debt load but they’ll be happy to have all that “stuff”.

  • Joint checking or separate accounts? Will the highest earner make all the decisions?

Sex
  • Do you like it? (sex) If one likes it 3-4 times a week, and one only likes it once a month, the difference could be a foundation for resentment.

  • How often?

  • Weekly, monthly, daily?

  • Would you describe yourself as adventurous in the bedroom?

  • What about romance before and after? How do you define romance?

  • What needs to happen for you to feel in the mood to be physically loved?

Religion
  • If one is a Baptist and one a Catholic, is there an understanding of what that means during the marriage?

  • One could attend one church without the other.  Or will you skip taking communion when you attend Catholic Church. Some Catholic churches don’t allow for married couples to both take communions if one practices another religion.

  • What if the other person doesn’t believe in God and won’t go to Church at all with you?

  • Also, what happens when the atheist or agnostic doesn’t want the children to go to Church with the believer?

Family/Friends
  • Does the family and your friends like the person you want to marry? If not, there could be conflict around holidays especially with close-knit families.

  • Many couples report stress when one is very close to the Mother or Father.

  • The future spouse doesn’t understand the daily need to talk with their parent or their siblings.

Children
  •  Will you agree to have them? If so, when, and how many?

  •  Who is going to do the parenting? Both of you? What will that look like?

Pets
  • Do you both want a pet? What if one of you is allergic, and shouldn’t have a pet.

  • Who is going to take care of the pet including walking the dog, feeding and grooming?

  • Can you financially afford the required care to keep your pet healthy?
